MEXICAN FOOD-O-TRON

March 14th, 2009 · No Comments

Mexican food is more than merely another genre of edibles. The tortillas that envelop the steaming carne asada topped with salsa is an addiction, a daily necessity to prevent the emptiness that results from a mexicanless day. As the process of overcoming addiction is a tumultuous one, I have decided to vent my favorite mexican restaurants to the readers of CHIBATRON in a last attempt to rid myself of the disease. Chain restaurants such as Rubios that irreversibly tarnish the name of Mexican food must not be mentioned, and it is my hope that CHIBATRON attracts readers that respect the tiny, dirty and hidden taco shops that so beautifully decorate San Diego. It is amusing to me, not in any way meant to disrespect the restaurants I so adore, that every small taco store is named after a mexican. An equivalent to such a concept would be if every white man also named his restaurant after himself, and a plethora of “Little Mikes Burger Shop’s” and “Edward’s Fine American Cuisine’s” plagued the streets. The jocular name’s of the restaurants without a doubt add to the experience of sitting at decaying tables, and sharing the community salsa.

My favorite mexican restaurant is different from the norm, it is a breathtakingly brilliant hybridization of a liquor deli and a taco shop, an unquestionable gift from god if I’ve ever seen one. The splendor of the whole setup is augmented by the fact that they do not ask for ID, a reasonable treat considering most of their clients most likely do not have one. My addiction however is not alcohol, it is Mexican food, and the meals served at Rudy’s in Solana Beach are utterly amazing. The usual Mexican restaurant stuffs their burritos with little cat turds of carne asada and rolls them into stale tortillas bought in bulk from Cosquitos (what i assume they call their Cosco). Rudy’s, however, graces every guest with real carne asada, meat that pulls apart beautifully, sinewy and authentic just as real carnivores enjoy. The tortillas themselves more than amply surpass the warm pitas served at Greek restaurants, and the community salsa (although it clogs often, and when pressure is applied to unclog the opening, the salsa spurts everywhere) is equally impressive in taste. To conclude, Rudy’s Taco Shop in Solana Beach is the primary preventative power in impeding that I overcome my gruesome addiction.
